Water down the wall. The same joint failing again.
There comes a point where repairing stops paying. We will tell you honestly when you have reached it.
Most of these you can see from the ground on a wet day. If two or more sound familiar, replacing tends to work out cheaper than carrying on patching.
Most often a joint that has failed, or a run that has dropped out of level.
UPVC goes brittle and chalky with age. Once one section has gone, the rest of that run is usually the same age and heading the same way.
The run dips, or has come away from the fascia. Usually the brackets, sometimes the board behind them.
If it spills over in heavy rain with nothing in it, the gutter is too small for the roof or the fall is wrong. Clearing it will not change either.
Standing water or eroded soil below a downpipe means it is not carrying water away from the house.
Once the same run has been repaired two or three times, each fix buys you a season and then the next joint goes.
Guttering is the cheapest part of a roofline and the part that protects everything else. When it fails, the bill does not land on the gutter. It lands somewhere more expensive.
Water running down the same spot every time it rains soaks into brick or render. Inside, that shows up as discoloured plaster and a musty smell on an outside wall. Drying it out and redecorating costs more than the guttering did.
Fascia and soffit boards rot from behind, where water sits against them out of sight. Once they have gone soft, new guttering has nothing solid to fix to, so the boards have to be replaced first. That is a bigger job than the one you started with.
Water standing in a split or blocked run freezes, expands and opens the crack further. A leak that looks minor at the end of summer is usually a bigger job by spring, and the months in between are when it does the most damage.
None of it is urgent the week you notice it. Most of it is urgent within a winter. That is the only reason we mention it.
Free, about twenty minutes, and nothing to sign at the end of it. You get a written plan and a fixed price, and time to think about it. We will not patch up a system that needs replacing, and we will not sell you a replacement you do not need.

Four UPVC profiles. Which one suits depends on the age of the house, the pitch of the roof, and how much water it has to shift. We go through it with you on the visit.

What most UK houses already have.
Straight lines and more capacity.
The decorative Victorian profile.
Roughly double the capacity of half-round.
What nine out of ten houses already have, and what nine out of ten should stay with. If yours copes in heavy rain there is nothing to decide.
The one upgrade worth the money. If a gutter spills over in a downpour while perfectly clear, it is too small for the roof. Deepflow holds roughly double.
Chosen for looks rather than capacity. On a Victorian or Edwardian frontage, plain plastic can look wrong where ogee looks right.
Or leave it to us. We will look at the roof, the pitch and how much water it has to shift, and tell you which one your house needs. If the standard option is right, that is what we will say.
Black and anthracite are what most people choose on a rendered or painted house. White still looks right on a modern estate. Brown has largely gone out of favour except where it matches existing timber.
Whatever you pick, the downpipes, brackets and fittings come in the same colour. We can deliberately contrast them if you would rather, though very few people do.
One length replaced and matched to what is already there. There is no minimum job, and no pressure to do more than needs doing.
Front or back in one go. Usually the sensible call when a whole side is the same age and going the same way.
Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits throughout. One visit, one price, everything matching and all the same age.
Replaced in UPVC where the timber has gone, or repaired and repainted where it is still sound. We can do the boards on their own, without touching the guttering, if that is all that needs doing.

It comes down to how much of the roofline is being done, how high the property is, whether scaffold or a tower is needed to reach it, and whether the fascia boards behind have gone. A single run on a two storey semi and a full wrap on a three storey detached are different jobs with very different figures.
That is why we look first. You get one fixed price covering labour, all parts and taking the old system away, and that is the figure you pay.
UPVC for the vast majority of houses. It does not rust, it needs nothing doing to it, and it is a fraction of the cost of the alternatives. Aluminium suits contemporary properties and seamless runs. Cast iron is the right answer on a listed or period property where the look matters and the budget allows, but it is heavy, expensive, and it will need painting.
Properly fitted UPVC should give you twenty years or more, provided it is kept clear. Most early failures are not the material, they are brackets spaced too far apart or a run set to the wrong fall, which is why the fitting matters more than the brand on the box.
Only if they have gone. New guttering screwed to soft timber will pull away again, so where the board behind has rotted it needs replacing at the same time. Where the timber is sound but tired, repairing and repainting it is usually the cheaper answer and we are happy to do that instead. Where it is fine, we will say so rather than add it to the quote. Some firms only offer full roofline replacement. We do not work that way.
Often, yes, and if a repair is the sensible answer we will say so. Replacement makes sense when the same run keeps failing, when the plastic has gone brittle across the whole length, or when the existing system was never the right size for the roof in the first place.
Most UK homes run 112mm half-round or 114mm square. A larger roof area, a steep pitch, or a long run feeding a single downpipe can all mean the standard size cannot cope, which is the usual reason a gutter overflows in heavy rain despite being perfectly clear. Where that is what is happening, we size it up.
Not for a normal replacement. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas are the exception, and there you may be restricted on materials and colour. Worth checking before anything is ordered.
A single run is usually a couple of hours. One elevation is typically half a day. A full property is normally a day, occasionally two if there is fascia work or difficult access. You will be told which before we start, not on the day.
Five years on our workmanship, in writing, covering the fitting itself. The system we install also carries its own manufacturer guarantee, and we tell you what that is before you commit.
Repairs to an existing gutter are guaranteed for one year, which is a different thing and worth being clear about. This five year cover is for a new system we have installed from scratch.
